Following are all the pieces I did last semester that made it onto the cover of a campus publication.

THE INDICATOR

Medium: Ink on paper, colored in Photoshop.

Stir-Fry (published 2/14/08).

CIRCUS

(Published May 2008) The image on the front cover (right) is an aquatint that I did for my printmaking class. I ran it through a filter in Photoshop to get the back cover (left) and designed the two logos (enlarged).

    1. What is an aquatint?

    2. The back Circus logo reminds me of strange crop circles.

    3. If you don’t have any ideas for your next art post, I think you should put up some of your prints from last semester (mostly because I haven’t seen them and would like to).

    1. Aquatint is a printmaking technique in which powdered rosin is applied to a metal plate so that when the plate is immersed in acid, anything not covered by the rosin grains gets etched and will therefore be able to hold ink when the plate is printed. The upshot of this is that it enables you to get large areas of fairly uniform shading in a print, as well as giving the shaded areas a kind of grainy texture. It’s also really time-consuming to get right (more so than most other techniques).

    2. If I talk too much about my crop circles, it will scare people and make them too hostile for the aliens to come down to Earth in their spaceship and spread their glorious knowledge of intergalactic cheesemaking to humankind.

    3. I’ll see about it. Right now I don’t have easy access to a scanner.

I am tempted to say that I knew what aquatint (and mezzotint!) was/were because of Academic Decathlon in high school. That is all.
