Some on the Left Less than Pleased

Of course, anytime I write something nice about Sen. Obama it probably means the Left is getting uneasy, some people want hope and change back without the moderate policies it takes to win:

I completely agree with you. I think this move to the middle was visible a mile away. Obama, despite embracing policies slightly to the right of Hillary, purposefully let himself get branded as a far-left politician, in order to attempt to win votes on the far left while still appealing to Democratic moderates and independents. He thinks he’s got the far left wrapped up (and, for the most part, he does, because most of them want McCain in office like they want a hole in the head), so he’s moving to the middle. You can’t become President without appealing to the middle, and Obama is doing a much better job of that than McCain. I think the best thing you can say about the McCain campaign right now is that it’s keeping McCain out of the news so well, no one will know if he makes another mistake. I think McCain will close the current polling gap, mostly because I’m a Democrat who believes in Murphy’s Law, but I still predict a slim Democratic win in November.

McCain’s recent position on torture, where he refused to rule out the use of water-boarding, is seemingly indicative of an opposite tendency in the Republican campaign, a shift rightwards rather than towards the center. I know McCain traditionally does badly with some of the core conservative support groups, but he seems to be in danger of throwing away his long cherished reputation as a maverick. This rightward drift cannot help but alienate some moderates and independents who otherwise seem to be McCain’s natural demographic.
