Race and the arts

December 6th, 2008 · No Comments

In light of the multitude of poetry-reading events in the past week, particularly Word! and No Mic Open Mic, there has been a lot of discussion about the racialization of these events.  Word!, sponsored by both Marsh Arts House and La Causa, was attended primarily by students of color, while No Mic Open Mic, sponsored just by Marsh, had an overwhelmingly white audience.  What do you think of this?  What can we do to de-self-segregate the arts here at Amherst?  Can we use art as a vehicle for multicultural and multi-racial mingling?  What new, innovative artistic creations might take shape if we took this extra step?  LET’S HERE WHAT YOU THINK!!!

Are you afraid of the dark??

October 25th, 2008 · No Comments

It’s almost November and you know what that means…Halloween’s almost here!  That’s right, it’s almost Halloween, that wonderful holiday when it’s legal to dress up like a psychopath and offer candy to little kids.  But the best part of Halloween is clearly Haunted Haus at Marsh.

Date: Halloween.   Time: TBA.   Place: Marsh, the haunted dorm on the hill.   Scariness on a scale of 1-10: 11.

Come one, come all.  Pampers provided.

Hello and welcome to the official Marsh Arts House blog!

September 9th, 2008 · 1 Comment

Since the Marsh Arts House Constitution was written in 1995, its stated objective has been “to provide a supportive working atmosphere for student artists, and to foster the presence of arts on the campus.”  Thus, what better place for Marsh residents and non-Marsh residents alike to discuss art and upcoming Marsh events than Amhpub?  Many initial posts by the official Marsh bloggers will be short announcements or single pieces of artwork to spark conversation about art on campus…and heck, art in the world!  So please comment, converse, argue (but be nice), write, sing, dance, and enjoy!  We’re just getting started, so there’s more to come soon…
