How-To

Welcome to AmhPub! Amherst’s new collaborative publication. Read below for tips on getting started.

Getting Registered

The process of getting registered is easy and takes approximately three minutes. Just follow these simple steps.

1. Click on “Register” at the top of the right sidebar on the home page.

2. Enter your username and Amherst email address. We recommend that you make your username your Amherst username, but it is not required. Select “Next.”

3. Your Blog URL will be amhpub.amherst.edu/your_amherst_username (if you want to set up a blog for an organization/group but you don’t have a separate email, get in touch with us directly). Enter your Blog Title (this can be anything). Select “Yes” to the question about having your blog show up in Google and sitewide searches if you plan to post anything on your blog; if not, select “No” (you can change this later).

4. You should now receive a confirmation email in your amherst inbox. Open the email and select the confirmation link. Your browser will open a new page stating that “Your account is now active.” Copy the password on that page and click “Login.”

5. A login screen should now be open. Enter your username and paste the password into the appropriate dialog boxes. Your Dashboard should appear. The Dashboard is the central location from which you can write posts and change the settings on your blog.

6. If you want to set your password to something other than the random letters and numbers assigned by the site, select the “Users” tab in your dashboard. Select the “Your Profile” tab. In that screen, scroll down to the “Update Your Password” box and enter your new password in both boxes. Select “Update Profile.”Now your blog is set up and ready to go. You can also change your display name here.

7. You can change the title of your blog in Options –> [General]. If you sign up as a non-searchable user because you don’t plan on blogging but change your mind later, you can change your blog to public in Options –> Privacy.

Try posting some sample posts. Play around with the settings on your dashboard. Try commenting on someone else’s blog. Your blog on The Amherst Public is your personal space. Make it your own and get involved in the conversation.

I had a blog, didn’t like the name, and deleted it. Now the site won’t let me start a new one with the same e-mail address. Help!

    Same problem as Raizel.

Youtube videos and how to integrate them.
We need some sort of WordPress code specific to our blog
but it’s not there under the profile tab, where it should be.

    How and when?

Alright- I’ve solved the youtube video problem. Simply paste the youtube video link into your post, then add the letter v after the http. So it will look like this:

    “httpv://www.youtube.com/movie.”

A video will be inserted automatically, like so:

If the video happens to be encoded in high-definition, insert vh instead of v for the higher-definition feed, like so:

    “httpvh://www.youtube.com/movie.”

Go ahead and try it out-if it doesn’t work lemme know.

On another note, we’ve just installed a plug-in in the dashboard called “help desk.” If you have any problems with the site please use this feature to file them.

Edit: We’re moving to a different version and have broken the old one in the process. Stay tuned…

testing the new “subscribe to comments” feature. If it works, when logged-in you can check the box at the bottom of a series of comments to receive email updates when somebody else adds a comment.

This isn’t really Aaron, but rather Erik hacked in as Aaron to test the comment feature. Does it work?

It does work! I just received an email.

Ok, the help desk plug-in now works again. Use it for filing complaints/issues.

…and there’s been an update to video embedding and functionality. You should now simply see buttons to embed videos from all sorts of sources when you’re in the “write” tab of the dashboard. Hopefully this makes things easier.

My posts are not showing up in the front page. How do I make this happen? Must I be qualified in some way for this to occur?
