Is Katy Perry Self Aware?

July 25th, 2008 · 1 Comment

I managed to avoid listening to the “song of the summer,” Katy Perry’s “I Kissed A Girl,” for a long time, but it finally got to me a few days ago. At first I found it really kind of offensive, but now I can’t help but wonder if there’s (slightly) more here than meets the eye. Is this song tongue in cheek? Or is just a meticulously crafted reflection of current youth culture sans judgment?

“I hope you hang yourself with your H&M scarf
While jacking off listening to mozart
You bitch and moan about LA
    …etc….
You’re so gay and you don’t even like boys
    No you don’t even like
    No you don’t even like
No you don’t even like boys”

    -Katy Perry, ‘You’re So Gay’

This does not suggest that she puts much effort into the, you know, social message of her lyrics. However, her songs are probably not worth taking offense at.
