Guerrilla Gardeners

An emerging group of individuals who call themselves “Guerrilla Gardeners” are organizing clandestine gardening ops to improve the conditions of public green spaces. The group started in London and is part environmentalist, part political activist, and part garden-loving.

The gardening special covert ops typically take place in the middle of the night to avoid detection although they are supported by most local groups. Richard Reynolds, the so-called Guerrilla Gardening ringleader, aims to “make more out of the land…whether it’s about creating food or beautifying it.”

Stylin’

by John Redmond ‘09

Rock stars have and forever will be associated with cool. It’s their job to be cool. Or is it? How many rock stars actually are cool? It’s tough to say when you come to realize that the rock star’s job isn’t so much about being cool as much as it’s about appearing cool. You might be able to say this same thing about the painfully image-conscious friend, but it’s the rock stars that stand atop this soaring manure heap of vanity. Enough bashing. It’s not easy to hate on a sweet look especially if it’s distinctive and original, so here are some of those looks.

Devo: Now here’s an awesome bunch of 80’s electro-pop nerds. Preeminently nerdy, Devo look fierce in their fire hydrant costumes. Kind of reminiscent of Kubrick’s droog uniform in gang mentality and straight quirkiness, but lacking in simplicity. Strength: hats, Weakness: no capes.

Bee Gees: Flaming but not gay, futuristic but seriously retro, the Bee Gees are a postcard of contradiction. Evidently took a note out of the Beatles’ wardrobe and threw in some sci-fi and South Beach for good measure. Strength: manes of chest hair, Weakness: guy on left doesn’t have the same goatee/moustache as others. (Note: the guy on the right looks a bit like Dobby out of the Harry Potter movies).

Daft Punk: The French electronic duo has expertly crafted giddups. With their leather scooter jackets and awesome helmets, they’ve got a nice 60’s Mod but from the future look going on. Strength: always in character, Weakness: probably doesn’t breathe very well.

Keef: Look in the mirror dude—that AARP card will be in the mail very shortly. Gotta give him some respect though for staying strong. He obviously doesn’t give a shit about what anyone thinks, and if that isn’t cool then I don’t know what is. Strength: dedication, Weakness: dedication.

Jake & Elwood Blues (AKA Blues Brothers): Black suits, black ties, black fedoras and Wayfarers, these rock ‘n’ roll outlaws rocked the secret agent look righteously. This is a classic bluesman look that would later be appropriated by two-tone/rude boy skankers such as the Specials. Awesome sideburns too. Strength: all business, clean, and sophisticated, Weakness: not so original.

PNAU BABY

(via Big Stereo) PNAU has sorta been Australia’s hot little secret for a few years now, but with their latest self-titled album, taking over the world is only a matter of time.

Even without the children’s chorus (which will unfortunately/fortunately be compared to “D.A.N.C.E.”), “Baby” is one of those rare songs that you can jam out with while hanging out with your four year old niece and not be all embarrassed. There is so much potential for universal love here — it almost hurts.

A Good Sex Pahty - Sebastien Tellier

May 22nd, 2008 · No Comments

 (via Madame Lamb)

Sexuality is Sebastien Tellier’s third album. It’s been hailed as “aural viagra”and “the best French album since Discovery.” I’ve given it a listen and I have to concur — this is the realdealHolyfield. Dude is definitely a weirdo / huge badass and he brings home le bacon with 11 solid tracks.

His new album is, yep, all about sex… but not in a vulgar way. Seb sez: “‘Sexuality has to be sophisticated. To have a good sex party, you have to be in the mood. That’s why I made this sound. A very attractive record and a very attractive world, because that’s my vision of sex, it’s very glamorous. Before, I did some ’70s-type records, but I don’t want to have ’70s sex. Too hairy.’”

Produced by the Guy-Man, who called Seb “maybe the best singer and composer in France today,” Sexuality is a conceptual mishmash of frivolous and focused sounds and it sports some boss album art, too. See below. watch the video for Divine, nominated for a 2008 Eurovision award. my favorite new music video.
